What is GATE Entrance Exam?
GATE also called as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a prestigious entrance examination in India conducted by the Indian Institute of Sciences. This test is conducted by the IIS in collaboration with 7 other IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur, Guwahati, Roorkee and Kharagpur.
About GATE Exam
This exam is conducted to understand the performance levels of a graduate student. Hundreds of students across India aim for GATE from the first year of their graduation. The exam gives entrance to post graduation level and PhDs especially in higher education institutes which are financially assisted by the Ministry of Human Resource of Development (MHRD). The valid GATE score is a visa for the students to enter into these reputed institutes to do their post-graduation and doctoral programs in the fields of technology, engineering and other branches of life sciences. As per the norms of the institute a student may be directly given admission into the course or they might have to give another admission test or interview conducted by the specific department. However, if there is a separate interview or test conducted by any particular department, 70% of weightage is given to the GATE scores and 30% to the test or interview.

- Any graduate in engineering, technology or architecture or a student in the final year of such graduate program.
- Post graduates in the branches of science, mathematics, statistics or computer sciences or a student in the final year of these post graduate programs.
- Students who are in the 4 or 5 year integrated master’s degree program.
GATE Entrance Exam Syllabus
The syllabus for the GATE is different depending upon the branch of study. It covers almost all the major topics related to the graduation theory and it is vast. In fact the questions are quite logic and one should have logic reasoning in order to understand the question and provide answer during the examination.
How to apply for GATE Entrance Exam
Applying for the GATE can be done via GATE online processing system. A candidate needs to login to the GATE website and register their credentials and can do it online. The application fee varies depending upon the gender and the community. Male candidates falling under the General or OBC quota have to pay Rs.1500/-, Women candidates falling under the General or OBC quota – Rs.750/-. Any SC, ST or Person with a physical disability have to pay around Rs.750/-
Candidates who fall under the special category and avail the entrance fee discount should produce their relevant documents and the students who are in their last year of their course should get an attestation on the form provided in their website by the college principle.
GATE Entrance Exam pattern
Test duration is for 3 hours with a total of 65 questions. The score is for 100 marks out of which 10 questions of 15 marks are general aptitude, 15 marks of engineering mathematics and the remaining 70 marks are attributed for the technical questions based upon the subject.
The exam paper consists of both multiple choice questions and numerical answer questions.
