Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is conducted by IIT Bombay on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Qualifying CEED is one of the requisites for the admission for few of the Post Graduation programs and Doctoral programs of Design at major IITs and IISc institutes.
The examination aims to test and assess the following:
Part A:
• Visual communication , Animation Design, Product Design, Automobile Design, Digital knowledge, Observation and Visualization, Architecture knowledge, General awareness
Part B:
• Basic visual sketching, Problem identification as well as solving skills, Observation skills, Design sensitivity, Involving visual communication, Creativity
Preparation tips
- Go through the earlier years’ question papers. You will understand the pattern of questioning. There is a lot of scope in answering them. The authorized website as well many other websites are providing the previous years’ question papers.
- Some of the sites and books provide answers to the previous years’ question papers. Answer the papers yourself and compare your answers with the provided solutions.
- Start the preparation as early as possible and plan the preparation constructively. Avoid the short period preparations. The skills can be honed better in the long run than in rush.
- Go through various articles related to design and visual communication. Several magazines and blogs would help the best.
- Hone your drawing skills. You need not be proficient in drawing but must be able to draw the objects with the required perspective. Several websites provide video tutorials which would help to enhance your skills.
- Experiment with your creativity and put them paper, as many as possible.
- Learn new designing programs and new concepts in arts
- Solve puzzles of different types from magazines, websites and news papers
- Read and practice few of the books that could enhance the mental ability and intelligence.
- You should be able to face the unexpected questions.
- The knowledge of various designs and art forms, particularly of India, such as architecture techniques, temple and their structures, geography etc. would help in answering many of the questions.
- Meet the people who have cleared the exam and learn from their experience.
- Take the mock tests conducted by few of the institutes and educational websites.
Tips while attending the exam
- Creativity and aesthetics are the basic testing components. Think in different ways to present the answer. The descriptive paper provides you great scope to present your creativity.
- Be precise and précis while answering. Don’t be poetic as it is of creativity matter.
- Add certain sense of humor
- Present your thoughts and abilities and avoid providing the proposals of someone else.
- Leave the unknown questions as unanswered in Part – A rather than providing wrong answer. The negative marking for wrong answer is applicable for the phase.
- Think out of the box and answer with broaden perspective
- Presentation impresses the evaluator. Present your answers in attractive way with clear visuals.
