IIFT is perhaps the most challenging among all the MBA entrance examinations in India. With multiple sections and sub-sections, a unique marking scheme, differential marking and a variable number of questions, the exam has given many aspirants’ sleepless nights. However, like all competitive examinations, IIFT can also be cracked by following 2 simple rules – remain calm and stick to the basics. Understanding the examination pattern and grading methodology is of immense help in clearing any competitive exam. Start preparing for the exam at least 5-6 months in advance.
The following pointers will help guide you to success in the examinations.
Understand the Exam Basics: The IIFT exam can have 120-135 questions spread across the 4 sections. Since the exam follows a differential marking pattern, the marks allotted to each question would depend on the question type.
Negative Marking: A 1/3rd negative marking is allotted for each question. Answer questions that you are sure of and avoid taking chances by guessing the answers to questions you do not know as this can result in negative marking if incorrect. This is particularly true in the General awareness section.
Sectional Cut-offs: In some years, the exam had sectional cut-offs. In such cases, the candidate needs to ensure that he makes the cut-off for each section, failing which he will not be short-listed. The General awareness section usually has a very low cut off. Solve easy sections first to ensure that you have more time for the tougher and lengthier sections.
No-Sectional time limit: The exam is offline and there is no sectional time limit. Candidates can thus adjust their time for each section according to personal convenience.
Time Management: Keep time consuming questions in Data Interpretation and reading comprehension for the end as these questions are designed to use up time.
Match the Following: Answer Match the following questions since they are easy, do not consume much time and can be completed if you know most of the answers. The general awareness section usually has a Match the Following question.
General Awareness section: Avoid guess work in this section. Remain updated on the current affairs. Brush up on static GK. Solve previous year questions for practice. These steps will help you make the cut-off in this section.
Practice and accuracy: Each section requires accuracy and time management to ensure good scores and this is only possible through practice. Practice on sample papers and mock tests. Practice time management and attempt a minimum of 4 papers a day in the week just before the exams.
Read extensively: Regularly reading the newspapers, editorials and periodicals helps increase knowledge in current affairs and thus in the General awareness section. It also helps improve vocabulary, reading speed and comprehension.
Be persistent in your efforts: Practice diligently and stick to your schedule regardless of all external influences.
Master important concepts: it is essential that you understand and master important concepts since it is more helpful in solving fewer quality questions accurately, rather than answering a larger quantity of questions.
