Stenographer Grade Exam is conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC). The exam is conducted once a year. Usually the notification is found in the month of August and the exam is conducted in the month of December. The exam aims to recruit the stenography personnel to different Government Departments and Ministries.
Why to Take the Stenographer Grade Exam?
The exam is aimed to recruit the stenography personnel of Grade C for Ministries or Departments of Central Government located mostly in Delhi and of Grade D for Ministries or Departments of Central Government including Attached or Subordinate offices located in States and Union Territories all over the country.
Stenographer Grade Exam Eligibility
The minimum age eligibility is 18 years and maximum limit is 27 years as on 1st August. Upper age limit is relaxed for candidates of SC/ST, OBC, PH, Ex-Servicemen and Central Government Civilian Employees. Candidates are required to pass 10+2 standard or equivalent from a recognized Board or University. The knowledge of computers is expected. Those who qualify the skill test in Hindi must learn English skill and Vice versa after joining.

The selection procedure includes two tests – written test and skill test. The skill test is conducted to the candidates who qualify the written Examination. The skill test is conducted on computer only.
The exam consists of one objective type paper. The subjects covered are General Intelligence and Reasoning, which carries 50 marks, General Awareness that carries 50 marks and English Language and Comprehension that carries 100 marks. The duration of the exam is 2 hours for general candidates and 2 hours 40 minutes for visually handicapped or Cerebral Pulsy Candidates. There is negative marking for the wrong answers.
How to Apply Stenographer Grade Exam?
The applications can be submitted either online or by post. The fee is exempted for all women, SC/ST, and PH candidates.
Those who are submitting applications through online can pay the fee using the valid online payment modes like Net banking or Credit/debit cards through the official website of commission. The candidates must be ready with scanned photographs and scanned signature before filling application online. The application process includes two parts. On filling the part I Registration number shall be generated which has to be noted down. Part II can be filled using the supplied registration number.
The offline paying applicants must attach SBI Challan. The candidate must indicate the centre of his choice in the application form itself. Applications must be sent to the mentioned Regional or Sub-regional Offices of the Commission.
How to Prepare for Stenographer Grade Exam?
The exam is conducted in the standard of class 12. Thus following the high school text books is rather important.
The test includes verbal and non verbal questions besides the questions that test the perceptual accuracy and aptitude. Several publications are providing the books that could help in the preparation of these topics.
English grammar and vocabulary must be practiced. Any general English Grammar book or high school text books would help for preparation. Comprehension of passage also must be practiced.
Reading English newspaper regularly enhances English language skills as well as General Awareness.
Practicing old papers and mock tests help to understand the questioning pattern as well as improve the time management.
