The National Institute of Technology (NIT) of Karnataka is situated at Surathkal near Managalore. The institute was established in the year 1960. It was famous by the name Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC) till 2002. The college was upgraded as National Institute of Technology in the year 2002 and is also declared as an Institute of National Importance. With the motto Work is Worship, the college has committed faculty and alumni that made the vision of the college come true.

Admissions into Bachelor Degree programs in Engineering are based on the marks scored in class 12 and on the ranks attained in JEE (Main) test in the ratio of 40% and 60% respectively. Fifty percent of the total seats are allotted to the local candidates of the state and the rest of the seats are for the students of other states. M.Tech admission is on the bases of the rank obtained in GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). MCA admissions are on the basis of the rank obtained in NIMCET. MBA admission is on the basis of CAT /MAT score, group discussion, personal interview and work experience.
