The B.Des Courses or the Bachelors in Design courses is an academic degree awarded at the undergraduate level. Though it is related to the arts and centered on creativity and artistry, the degree is awarded for those who have excelled in the art of designing. In this case the designing of anything ranging from textiles, fashion and jewelry to games, graphics and multimedia are included among others. The degree is also known as the Bachelors in Design Studies and the Bachelors in Design Arts. The other name for the B.Des Courses is B.D. Courses which encompasses even more subject areas. Since the field of designing is immensely vast, there is no limit to what the student with a degree in the B.Des Courses can learn to design.
Details about the B.Des Courses
Duration: The duration of the B.Des Courses is for 4 years and the study is divided into 8 semesters at the end of which the entire syllabus is completed. Some of the institutions conduct a five year course which is more advanced and extensive.
Eligibility for Admission: The candidate who has successfully completed the 10+2 or the Higher Secondary examination with a minimum of 45% aggregate is eligible for admission.
Students should have completed the Higher Secondary or the 10+ 2 examination with physics, Chemistry and Mathematics besides English as the subjects of study.
Admission to some of the B.Des Courses conducted by the Institutes of National Importance is based on the scores obtained in the Entrance Examinations conducted by them. The score of the examination along with the marks of the qualifying are taken into account for admission.
The Structure of The Course: Generally, most of the institutes conducting the B.Des Courses follow a generalized pattern of curriculum which includes the Foundation Course and the Specialization Courses.
Mode of education: The B.Des Courses are conducted in the formal mode by various colleges and institutions where students can seek admission and taken the course full time. But for students who are unable to take the course on a regular basis can take it up by the distance education mode.
Foreign Universities in India
There are some Foreign Universities that conduct the B.Des Courses in India and it is available as a 3 year course. A Bachelor’s Honours degree is awarded. Besides the qualifying examination score of 50% aggregate, the students also need to prove their language proficiency with an IELTS – 6 Band Score or a TOEFL Score of 650 PBT / 79 IBT
